Ductile iron pipe (DI pipe) is a high-performance pressure pipe constructed from spheroidized graphite cast iron, which has more strength and fracture resistance than ordinary cast iron. Introduced in the United States in the mid-1950s, it quickly became the industry standard for water, wastewater, and pressure pipeline systems because of its dependability and resilience.
The interior of DI pipes is often lined and/or coated with cement mortar, which considerably prevents internal corrosion such as tuberculation by forming a chemical barrier and preserving a high pH zone near the pipe wall. External protection alternatives include loose polyethylene sleeving or bonded coatings like zinc and bituminous layers, which shelter the pipe from harsh soils and extend service life.
With a normal service life of over 100 years, DI pipe is extremely durable, especially in difficult settings such as earthquake zones, high-traffic regions, and shifting soils. It is also sustainable. DI pipes frequently include more than 90% recycled material and are totally recyclable after use.
